Every French noun has a gender: it is masculine or feminine.
To identify its gender, you can put un or une before the noun: un chat (masculine), une fleur (feminine). You can also use le or la.
A noun also has a number: it is singular when it refers to one person, animal or thing, and plural when it refers to more than one.
Examples: un chien (singular), des chiens (plural).
Be careful: in the plural, the determiners les, des, ces, mes, ses do not show whether a noun is masculine or feminine. To find its gender, you can change it to the singular: des voitures → une voiture (feminine), les bateaux → un bateau (masculine).
A noun can therefore be masculine singular, feminine singular, masculine plural or feminine plural.
